James Cameron Does It Again!

Avatar is going to be an awesome movie. He’s described it as Dances with Wolves…. with aliens.

Check out the leaked trailer:

Ok but seriously… it’s going to be awesome. It’s a pretty good time to be a sci-fi fan. District 9, Moon, Star Trek. Also, people who haven’t watched FRINGE need to catch up since second season starts soon. It’s seriously good and you’re going to miss out.

Edit: Actual trailer can be seen here and it does pretty much look like Dances With Alien Wolves.

Proccessor Intensive Cheese

  • Talking about the tech inside the new Zune HD with my friend Chris, Mainly the awesome Tegra chip. This is usually how our conversations end up...
  • me: dude... 24 hours of music play on one charge!
  • Chris: that's crazy! damn...
  • me: it's the tegra chip man. that thing is low power, and yet can decode HD video
  • Chris: who makes it?
  • me: Nvidia. It's gonna start popping up in a lot more stuff. I can't wait for a phone to have that.
  • Chris: when did they get into the processor market?
  • me: well it's actually closer in design to a GPU... so in that sense they have always been making things like it. But this is their first outing into the mobile general purpose computing chips.
  • me: They have their sights on Intel. should be an interesting battle.
  • Chris: hmmm... seems like a pretty hard ship to sink, I'd say, or rather, a pretty hard "chip" to sink... OH! I'm here all week folks... hahaha
  • me: HAHAHA... ba dum bum
  • me: You could say they are hoping to clean their clock... cycles!
  • Chris: OH! haha
  • me: They're goin-tegra-te some cheese on Intel's chips...
  • Chris: hahaha!

Hot

I’m totally nerding out over the Zune HD. I’ve been a Zune user (possibly one of two) for a long time now and I love the interface. They took that interface and just made it even better. Plus Tegra chip, OLED screen, and HD radio makes this a must have for me.

Check out the interface in the video below.

Good news everyone!

If you read that in the voice of Professor Farnsworth from Futurama, then be happy because Billy West will continue voicing him along with the rest of the original cast doing their thing.

I hope you guys can read Canadian because that’s where the news broke apparently.

Sys Admin Friday!

First of all… Happy System Administrator Appreciation Day to all my fellow sys/net/anything-that-plugs-into-the-wall admins out there!

So let’s talk tech since it’s sys admin day. This concerns the AT&T-Apple partnership that is really just bad for everyone except AT&T… and probably also Apple as I’m sure AT&T pays a premium to keep Apple in their clutches. I’m sure everyone is already familiar with Apple’s seemingly arbitrary app approval process. Pretty much anything that steps on the toes of Apple or AT&T is going to get rejected. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think there are alternative browsers on the iPhone are there? Alternative music players? I honestly don’t know since my use of an iPhone is pretty limited, but I’m pretty sure there aren’t and here’s why. Apple has a policy, that any app that replicates functions already present on the iPhone OS will not be approved… and here is the reason for it. Because it will confuse the user. That’s right… they don’t think you can handle choice. The instant you see another application for browsing the web or making phone calls, you will regress into a chimp and start smashing you iPhone against rocks in the hopes of drinking the sweet nectar that is surely trapped inside.

Just recently the Google Voice app was rejected for reasons of “user confusion”. That’s a euphemism for “AT&T doesn’t want people to use Google Voice to send free texts and make cheap international calls.” I really don’t know why Apple would do what AT&T says. But seriously… Google was rejected! I mean if even Google is rejected… what chance does a little guy have.

This is the exact reason I’m such a fan of Android… and to a similar degree… Windows Mobile. Yes, I said Windows Mobile. Both platforms don’t yank apps and both platforms allow you to completely disregard any sort of market place/app store and install your app from where ever you feel like it without jail-breaking anything. Apple’s need for utter control over your (their) phone is going to bit them back some day . Although… maybe not. I suppose aside from the techie crowd, most people don’t even know about the apps that weren’t approved. So they don’t know what’s missing. I need to be able to control my technology and make it do what I want even if I crash it, but I suppose most people are satisfied with a cool phone that “just works.” Android does have it’s issues at the moment that a normal person just would not want to deal with. So I guess there are two sides here… and I guess I’m on the side that’s okay with troublshooting a phone as long as we get to use it however we want. I mean I can replace my dialer, phonebook, desktop, browser, and anything else. Granted I haven’t yet as most of the replacements aren’t spectacular or anything, but they will be someday and until then I still have a choice.

There’s of course one boat that we are all in right now… Lack of Flash. I’m pretty sure Flash runs terribly on any and every phone, which is why we still don’t have it. I really hate Flash because it’s such a resource hog, but there are so many sites that use it. Hulu being a pretty big one. It would be nice if we all moved to the much more efficient Silverlight, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

Let’s take the Tegra powered Zune HD and make an awesome phone eh Microsoft?

I think we’ve always suspected this is how she does it.

Meant to post this yesterday…

Sarah Palin Will Be Missed

Doesn’t that seem like a pretty plausible explanation of how she writes speeches? I know I’ve always had a hard time understanding exactly what she means anytime she starts letting words escape her mouth. Is it supposed to be part of her folksy charm which she actually doesn’t have any of? Now that she has quit as governor of Alaska… I really hope we never have to hear from her again. Somehow… I really doubt we’ve seen the last of her though. She loves the spotlight and this was just another (albeit stupid) act to get attention.

It’s mad I tell you!

Madhouse is making an Iron Man and Wolverine anime. Now… I like anime and I like both those characters, but it’s just not a good mix. Ok for Iron Man they might pull off something kind of cool because it’s basically mech. It still won’t be Iron Man, but it will be eye candy. Wolverine however. You don’t mess with Wolverine.

First up check out the Ironman trailer…

Ok… not bad. We’ve got Ironman and he looks like Ironman. We’ve got… ninja bots… okay sure we can do that. Missiles flying everywhere? Check…. Green haired girl… umm… fine whatever. It’s still Ironman and it looks pretty.

Next up… Wolverine.

Why?! I’m sorry… Does “Wolverine” have a mullet? It’s like Madhouse was making an anime about some guy with claws that come out of his hands and Marvel told them they couldn’t do that so they reached a middle ground and just decided to call it Wolverine.

Now I like Madhouse. They do good work… but this just is not Wolverine. Please make me another Vampire Hunter D and leave Wolverine out of this.
